The capital of the island is Lefkas. It is built on a peninsula on the north side of the island. The town with its 7.000 inhabitants is the administrative, economic, commercial and cultural center of the area.
The historical center with its traditional houses, the narrow roads and the central square, follows the layout of medieval European towns. Here you can enjoy a cold “soumada” (local drink) or walk along the main street with its numerous shops and cafes.
