Lefkada is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea located between Corfu and Cephalonia . A thin strip of sea (50m) is all that separates the island from the prefecture of Akarnania . The two coasts are connected with a bridge.
The population of the island is 23.000 inhabitants. Twenty four small and satellite islands (Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Scorpios, Madouri, Sparti, Thilia, Kithros) surround the main island which is divided in 6 Municipalities and 2 communities.
The interior of the island is 70% mountainous and has retained its agricultural character untouched to a great degree. The western side of the island is dominated by the green of pines. Some of Europe 's most beautiful beaches lie along this shoreline ( Kathisma, Porto Katsiki). The eastern side is calm and quiet with strongly developed tourist resorts. Nydri and Scorpios, the island of Onassis , are the most famous ones.
