THE CHARAMOGLEION LIBRARY OF LEFKADA

A source and documentation centre of Lefkadian studies
SUMMARY
This library has functioned in Lefkada since 1991 and holds books, off-prints, studies, articles, engravings and maps by no less than a total of 810 native writers of Lefkada, as well as other works referring to the life of
the island throughout all historical periods. The total number of original and photocopied titles is 29.000.
Aristotle A. Charamoglis amassed the collection at his own initiative and expense from 1973 to 1985, at which date he donated it to the Cultural Center of the Island Council of Lefkada which then undertook to finance the maintenance and continuation of the collection, constructing a small elegant building for the purpose at the Cultural Center , where the Library
was officially opened to the public in 1991. In the meantime A.Charamoglis himself continues to enrich the Library‘s collection. The Library does not yet have a qualified librarian and is in need of a computer-based catalogue in order to comprise an effective center for Lefkadian Studies. Both the Library and its founder were awarded a prize by the Athens Academy , while the Guinness Book of Records refers to the library as the largest of its kind devoted to a specific geographical region.
